We left our good friends Chris and Gillian on Monday (Gillian must be the best hostess in the world…thanks a billion for your gracious hospitality…) From Zurich, we headed east towards Devon. Our route took us from Davos to Stelvio via Bormio…but basically we were in the middle of no where and driving through some pretty precarious mountain passes. These were the roads voted by Top Gear as the best driving roads in all of Europe…and although we weren’t driving a Lamborghini Gallardo, it was thrilling and breathtaking all at the same time. Now while Chris can take all the glory for executing excellent technical driving skill, I think my role of riding passenger and having to hand half way out the window to catch some of the pictures should be noted as well.
That is one happy boy…living a lifetime dream…
Yea…well that is me
And Chris’ famous couple self portraits…that one is for the family…
Completely isolated…..we kept wondering who the heck drives through here….
Chris is looking out at our road ahead…here I’ll zoom in..
Can you see it?!? What the heck it that?
Now, can you see that incline ahead of us…The sign said it was a %10 drop
There is a better look at where we are going….needless to say there were many prayers said on this journey…I don’t think the good lord heard so many pleas to keep us safe as we stupidly launched ourselves down the road…he must have been thinking…’idiots’
You can see me in the mirror there….I think this might be as ‘extreme’ photography as I go…but still…hanging half way out the passenger window is pretty good..
Just beautiful pavement…
Lots of motorcyclists
This is when the two of us were questioning what the heck we were thinking….I have never been so scared in my life…as if that timber railing is going to do much…this road turned to dirt track a bit further…..
I like it when there are metal guard rails….but seriously there were several turns like this where there was just nothing….nothing keep your wheel from going just on that edge…I didn’t take pictures of those…way to scared…
Crossing over to Italy..
and another hairpin turn…
Can you believe that?!¬† Sorry there is going to be several pics of the same thing…but what the heck is that! We are about to go down it…
All we could say…was ‘holy crap!’
Here we go!
There was a little hotel and resturant/bar in the background in case you wanted to stop….cool hey…we declined the pint.
and yours truly…
Again….living a dream….
These little signs counted the hair pin turns down the mountain…yep we were on no. 34 and no where near finished
Bormio….!!!
And the reward….A nights stay in the beautiful St. Mortiz…
Views from our balcony
Glad we are somewhere safe…
Now we are heading down the San Bernadino Pass on Tuesday….and then driving to Nice, France…
The journey continues…..
