Austin Engagement Session Tips

March 19, 2021

One of my favorite parts of being a photographer is getting to capture my couples in so many moments! It’s not just the wedding day – but also the engagement shoot! This is such a fun way for my clients to re-connect with each other, get a little pampered, and have a fun photoshoot. But, I know there are a lot of questions when it comes to these sessions. Which is I wanted to share my top tips for a relaxing Austin engagement session! I recently had an article in The Knot, where I shared my tips along with fellow wedding pros – so make sure to read that article, here!

Why Should We Do an Engagement Session?

How To Pick The Engagement Session Location

First, remember that the photoshoot is really about YOU and not the location. Try not to overthink locations! I tell my couples to choose just one or two places for the shoot to take place. Photographers need time to tweak poses and get you comfortable. You cannot do that if you are taking a tour of all the hot landmarks and hitting up a bunch of locations. In addition, light is more important than the location. So getting the timing right is more important than getting a location right.

Most shoots will happen during the week and you might need to take time off work, especially during times of the year when sunset is earlier in the day. Your wedding photographer is photographing weddings and events on Saturdays and most likely will need to take Sunday off to be with family. So keep this in mind when booking a session!

Also, if you want your shoot to be more private, opt for early morning and weekday versus a crowded weekend.

How To Relax Before Your Austin Engagement Session

I know that getting your picture taken is a little nerve wracking! But I have some tips on how to get a little more relaxed. First, go out for a drink before! This can help ease some of those nerves. Also, don’t forget to eat before hand. Sessions are usually around dinner time and we don’t want any hangry photos! This can also make sure you keep energized for the whole shoot. And after the shoot, have a date night! You are all dressed up, and got to cuddle up with your sweetie, so celebrate! Go treat yourselves to a relaxing and romantic date night.

Bring The Dog Along

I love dogs! Lot’s of my couples bring their pup to the session, but I do have a few tips. First, make sure to let your photographer know ahead of time and make sure it is okay. This way they can plan an appropriate location and the logistics involved.

I recommend we shoot you with your fur-babies the first 15 minutes or so of your session (they are like toddlers…short attention span) and that you have a friend or family join us to act as a handler. They can help with treats, leashes, and getting their attention during this part of the shoot and then take your baby back home or just hang out and petsit while you are finishing up the shoot with just the two of you and your photographer. You don’t want to spend the session trying to take care of your dog, so bring someone along to handle that for you!
