A Winter Wedding at The Driskill in Downtown Austin

Shireen and David wanted their February wedding to feel easy for guests, beautiful indoors, and connected to the city. The Driskill gave them exactly that.

They were committed to a fully walkable wedding and wanted to avoid long transportation times between locations. The hotel’s downtown setting made that simple, while the interiors gave them the kind of architectural character they wanted for a winter celebration.

The venue also influenced the design. Because The Driskill already has so much visual detail, they did not feel the need to overdecorate. Their inspiration came partly from a trip to France they took shortly after getting engaged, including a stay at the Ritz Paris. Roses, silver tones, and classic interiors became part of the wedding aesthetic.

The Proposal

David’s proposal was a complete surprise.

The two had gone out to celebrate his birthday, with dinner planned later in the evening. Before the reservation, they stopped for drinks on a rooftop, something that was normal for them. Over wine and a cheese plate, David stood up, got down on one knee, and proposed.

There were no photographers or elaborate setup, which made the moment feel especially personal.

When they arrived at dinner, both sets of parents were waiting to surprise them, giving them an immediate chance to celebrate together.

A Wedding Design Inspired by the Venue

Shireen and David chose The Driskill because it combined a beautiful interior with a central location.

Since the hotel already has such strong architectural details, their design did not need to compete with the space. Roses and silver tones added a polished layer without overwhelming the rooms.

Shireen also has a strong interest in interior design, so the visual character of the venue mattered to her. The result felt cohesive because the decor worked with the hotel rather than trying to transform it into something else.

Shireen’s Wedding Dress and Fashion

Shireen wore a Carolina Herrera wedding dress she purchased at Saks Fifth Avenue.

It was one of the first dresses she tried on, but after trying more than 30 others, she kept thinking about it and eventually returned to it.

Because the dress itself was simple, she chose more playful shoes: sparkling Tabitha Simmons Mary Janes with a jeweled buckle.

Her bridesmaids wore Jenny Yoo.

David wore a white dinner jacket from J.Crew with custom-tailored pieces from Alton Lane and shoes by Crockett & Jones.

A Surprise After-Party in The Driskill Ballroom

One of the best moments of the night happened near the end of the reception.

As guests thought the celebration was winding down, Shireen and David surprised everyone by leading them into the ballroom for an after-party with food, a DJ, and a second dance floor.

This is one of the reasons I love photographing weddings at The Driskill. The hotel allows planners to create real transitions throughout the evening. Guests can move into a completely different room and suddenly feel like the party has started all over again.

The ballroom works especially well for this because it can be closed off until the reveal.

One of Their Favorite Photographs

One of Shireen’s favorite images from the wedding was a quiet moment just before the ceremony.

Her father was hugging David while still holding her hand.

It was a small, emotional moment that could have easily passed unnoticed, and it is exactly the kind of interaction I am always watching for on a wedding day.

Their Advice for Other Couples

Their advice was simple:

Enjoy it.

The wedding day moves quickly, and they encouraged other couples to be present for it rather than worrying about every small detail.
