A River Oaks Country Club Wedding in Houston

River Oaks Country Club has been on my list of Houston venues I wanted to photograph again for years.
I had not photographed a wedding there in more than 15 years, although I had admired plenty of celebrations at the club during that time. Returning for this wedding was a good reminder of why it has such a strong sense of place.
The property feels formal but residential. The landscaped grounds, large windows, curved hallways, and interior rooms all give you visual variety without leaving the club.
This wedding was planned by Emilee Proctor and the team at Belle Events, with floral and decor by Blooming Gallery. This beautiful River Oaks Country Club wedding truly showcases the venue’s charm.

A Rainy Wedding Day at River Oaks Country Club

Rain changed the plan for this wedding.
The couple had hoped to use the patio and grounds, but the weather kept the ceremony and portraits indoors. Fortunately, River Oaks Country Club has enough strong interior spaces that the photographs never felt like a backup plan.
The large windows throughout the club became especially useful. We used the window light near the ceremony area and along the curved hallway for bridal portraits and the bride’s first look with her father.
That is one of the things I look for when scouting a venue. A good rain plan is not simply finding a covered location. It is knowing where the best interior light is and how to create enough variety without disrupting the timeline. This River Oaks Country Club wedding still offered stunning images despite the rain.

An Indoor Ceremony in the Main Dining Room

The ceremony took place in the Main Dining Room. The production team used draping, a custom stage and aisle, floral design, and candlelight to reshape the space for the ceremony.
One of the distinctive features of this part of River Oaks Country Club is its green wallpaper.
Many couples love that wallpaper and choose to incorporate it into their design. For this wedding, much of it was covered with soft draping, which created a lighter ceremony setting while still allowing the architecture of the room to come through.
The windows also make this room useful photographically. Even on an overcast, rainy day, there was beautiful natural light available for portraits.

Portraits Inside River Oaks Country Club

Because we could not go outside for portraits, we worked with the architecture and window light inside the club.
The curved hallway near the ceremony room is especially good for this. It gives you depth, soft light, and a cleaner background than you might expect in a busy wedding venue.
We also photographed the bride near the green wallpaper and used those interior spaces for her bridal portraits and first look with her father.
This is where experience in changing conditions matters. The portrait plan can change because of weather, but the photographs should still feel deliberate.

Cocktail Hour in the Salon

After the ceremony, guests moved into the Salon for cocktail hour. The event plan used the Salon as the dedicated cocktail space before the Grand Ballroom opened for dinner.
I like the Salon because it has a more residential feeling than the larger event rooms. The curved architecture, windows, mirrors, seating areas, and smaller cocktail tables create natural places for guests to gather.
It also gives the wedding a change in atmosphere without requiring anyone to leave the property.

A Floral-Filled Reception in the Grand Ballroom

The Grand Ballroom was where the design became much more dramatic.
Blooming Gallery layered the room with soft white, blush, coral, and green florals. Suspended arrangements surrounded the chandeliers while floral installations continued across the tables and dance floor.
The room had a lot happening visually, but it still felt cohesive because the floral design worked with the ballroom instead of fighting it.
I always make time to photograph a reception room like this before guests enter.
Those quiet room photographs matter. Once dinner begins, chairs move, glasses fill, candles burn down, and the room takes on a completely different energy.
Both versions deserve to be photographed.

Photographing River Oaks Country Club

What stood out to me most on this wedding day was how much variety there is within the property.
The ceremony room has large windows and distinctive architectural details. The Salon feels more intimate. The Grand Ballroom gives planners much more room to build a larger production.
And even though the rain prevented us from using the grounds for portraits, the interiors gave us plenty of options.
My photography team arrived early enough to scout the property, photograph the exterior and venue spaces, and coordinate coverage while production continued throughout the club.
For a wedding with several rooms, a large vendor team, and detailed production, that preparation makes a difference. You don’t want to discover where the best light is after the important moments have already started.

Working With Belle Events

This wedding was planned by Emilee Proctor and the Belle Events team.
I appreciate working with planners who are willing to talk through photography logistics in detail before the wedding. Family photographs, portraits, room reveals, private meals, and multiple event spaces all have to fit into the same timeline.
Those conversations help me understand how the planner is thinking about the day and make sure the photography plan supports the larger event.
After the wedding, Emilee shared that she had seen the couple the following day and they were “so, so happy.”
That is always the best kind of post-wedding message to receive.

River Oaks Country Club Wedding Photography

It was special to return to River Oaks Country Club after so many years.
I had admired countless weddings photographed here during that time, and being back reminded me why the venue has remained such an important Houston setting.
It also proved something I always tell couples: weather can change the plan, but it does not have to limit the photographs.
Good planning, strong indoor light, and a venue with architectural variety gave us everything we needed.
