A Romantic Candlelit Wedding at Brazos Hall in Downtown Austin

When you plan weddings for a living, you have seen a lot.

For her own wedding at Brazos Hall, the bride already knew which ideas had stayed with her over the years. She had spent five years planning weddings in Austin, so when it came time to design her own celebration, she pulled from the rooms, details and ideas she remembered most.

“Our vision revolved around components that would create a ‘romantic evening,’” she said. “Moody colors, warm candlelit dining, velvets, black matte details with hints of gold.”

The finished space felt rich and intimate, especially once the sun went down.

Why They Chose Brazos Hall

The couple wanted their out-of-town guests to experience downtown Austin, and Brazos Hall gave them the space they needed for their guest count.

There was also a practical advantage.

“It was a huge bonus that we did not have to have a rain plan with the space,” the bride said. “A quick flip to plan B can be stressful and we wanted to eliminate that situation.”

For a couple who wanted to enjoy the day without unnecessary logistical stress, it made sense.

And once the room was filled with candlelight, florals and dark, layered textures, Brazos Hall took on an entirely different feeling.

A Romantic, Moody Wedding Design

The bride knew the mood she wanted from the beginning.

Warm candlelight played a major role in the reception design. Black matte details and deep colors gave the room contrast, while velvet and touches of gold added warmth.

Because she had planned so many weddings herself, she did not need to start with a blank Pinterest board.

“I was able to choose my most memorable designs to incorporate into our wedding, making it uniquely ours.”

It is also part of the advice she now gives other couples.

“Pick a design you love and stick with it. Pinterest can drive you crazy during the months leading up to the wedding day. Be confident in your original inspiration.”

Good advice from someone who has seen the planning process from both sides.

The Fashion

The bride wore a Yaniv Persy gown purchased at Serendipity Bridal in Austin.

Her accessories were simple and personal. She chose small stud earrings and a comfortable shoe with a low heel.

“I know that the shoes are rarely seen, and I wanted to be comfortable,” she said.

She also carried a vintage pearl purse that belonged to her grandmother.

The bridesmaids were asked to choose their own black dresses, which created a mix of silhouettes while keeping the overall look cohesive with the men’s black tuxedos.

Mike wore a tuxedo from SuitSupply with a black velvet dinner jacket.

But the bride had another look planned for him.

“I knew he really loved the burgundy velvet tux jacket as well, so I surprised him with this one for the wedding.”

He switched between the black and burgundy velvet jackets during the day.

Why Photography After Dark Mattered

The bride had a very specific reason for choosing me to photograph the wedding.

“With a romantic and moody day in mind, I knew I needed a photographer that could really capture the overall feel of the day,” she said.

She also understood something couples do not always consider when choosing a photographer.

“The pictures are just as important once the sun goes down.”

I could not agree more.

Candlelit rooms need to still feel like candlelit rooms in the photographs. The warmth, shadows and atmosphere are part of the design. I want the reception images to feel connected to what guests actually experienced in the space, not stripped of the mood once the lights go down.

A Few Quiet Minutes Before the Reception

One of the couple’s favorite moments happened before guests entered the finished space.

“A special moment we shared, and I recommend, was viewing our ceremony and reception area together before any guests entered,” the bride said. “The stillness and candlelight was breathtaking.”

It gave them a chance to take in everything they had planned before the room filled with family and friends.

A wedding day moves quickly. A few quiet minutes together can feel surprisingly significant.

Their Favorite Photographs

The bride especially loved their couple’s portraits.

“We had just seen each other for the first time and we were so happy.”

There was no need to manufacture much beyond that.

They had just had their first look, the excitement was fresh, and they were fully in the moment with each other.

Those portraits still had polish, but the emotion was already there.

Advice From a Wedding Planner Bride

After years of helping other couples plan weddings, the bride had one more piece of advice.

“Don’t dwell on the small things, like the font style of your cocktail napkins. Pick one and move on so you can truly enjoy the planning process.”
